Chinese Cartoon and Animation



Chinese pop culture is today a mixture of traditional Chinese customs and Western influences. Rock stars and movie stars now enjoy admiration in China much the same as Hollywood celebrities do in the U.S., yet their art still clearly retain an ethnic personality.

Pop songs might often sound similar to western styles but will also sometimes throw in a line played by a classical Chinese instruments, or some lyrics alluding to a classical Chinese tale. Movies and TV shows often take place in ancient times and contain many historical elements —— the Kung fu movies that have made their way around the globe are just one popular example.

Other than this, the Americanize trend also affect Chinese on pop food and life-style, especially among young people. American franchises star to occupy a portion of Chinese market. A lot of people even addicted to those "western-like" "cool" stores, such as McDonalds', Pizza Hut and Seven-eleven. In Hong Kong, there are over 500 Seven-eleven stores. It is like one store every another block. 


          
Cartoon history in China started in the 1920s and was very traditional at that time. However, it has been heavily influenced by the needs of Western studios and Disney in particular since 1940s. Also affected by the rapidly developing Japanese animation storm.
As the popularity of cartoon industry, generations and generations of people grew up watching cartoon and animation. It is extremely popular among "after 80s".

Nowadays, animation in China is having a great changing and starts to form a new style like Japanese marketing. Zi bu yu is an animation story drawn by Chinese illustrator - April, and published both in China and Japan. A lot of Japanese people like it too. The name of this animation is taken from Confucius's quote "子不语怪力乱神", which means gentlemen do not talk about weird things. But all the stories in this animation are about weird things and obscure things that cannot be told clearly.
