Reflection About the Course

Reflection About the Course

Before the semester started, I was actually looking forward to take this class and knew that would be a lot of fun.  Since I had ESL art appreciation class with Gitte last year, and it was awesome.  I’ve always been a big gallery and museum person even before I came to America.  The art 103 course with Gitte gave me a great chance and great guide of visiting those cool museum and gallery places in Chicago.  Along with all the interesting assignments and projects we’d done, the class was not only about lecture and taking notes, you got the motivation (well, maybe you have to because it’s assigned) to think of art, define your concept of art, and even create your own art pieces.

[Excuse me of talking out of topic.  It’s just I still cannot control my exciting and enthusiasm of the art appreciation class.  All right, I will come to the point now]

Pop culture is everywhere around us.  The movies we go to in a theater or DVDs we watch at home; the love songs we put in our iPods or the techno music we dance along with in a bar; the gossip news we talk about in breaks of work and school or Oscar Award winners we have posters of on the wall in our bedrooms are all pop-culture elements through daily life.  Living among them, we probably barely thought about analyzing pop-culture.  That’s what most attractive for this class, because we are learning something we already know a goodly amount of but only stay at the surface.

Therefore, the class can be difficult while it is interesting.  The concepts are not stably defined since the world of pop culture is changing every day.  The goal of the class is also not clear.  What we supposed to know after this semester?  What skills are we learning?  I think each individual will get really differently from this class, especially when this class trains us more about critical thinking and exploring by our own.

Other than textbook, we used a lot of out-of-class materials, like the Red Eye, websites, field trips, and social events.  The most frequently used source is Internet.  We either search information from websites for our presentation or create our own pop-culture stuff such as blogs, glogsters and avatars.  Moreover, which is my favorite also, we are encouraged (or say assigned) to attend pop-culture events out of school.  As a new comer to America, I don’t know much about the festivals, events, celebrations or activities I can join here in the city.  This class gives me chances to be involved in those cool events and, at the same time, impulse me to find out more by myself.  Comparing with my first year here, I am a huge step forward to a social person now.

Besides, I like it when we have those presentations and discussions.  I prepare my topics, learn more of the objects I preferred by doing research; and through the presentation, I show my stuff to people while they introduce their favorites to me.  We are not only learning from the teacher but also among each others.  Since it is pop-culture class, I believe it is always better to know what other people at or around my age think of pop-culture and what people of another generation think.  The movies and songs my classmates introduced to me, I am surely going to check them out.

However, there is one thing sad about this semester. I didn’t have enough time to enjoy the class fully, especially when it is close to the final.  I am taking five classes this semester which is 17 credit hours.  Thus, I got to do all the final work during the last two weeks.  It’s like running over the clock; sometimes I almost think I’m exhausted.  When all the work dues on the same day, I know I could have done better but I just have a mess in my head and could not set myself in a good condition.

After all, I love this humanity 107 course!

Pop Culture in My Own Culture

Chinese Cartoon and Animation

Chinese pop culture is today a mixture of traditional Chinese customs and Western influences. Rock stars and movie stars now enjoy admiration in China much the same as Hollywood celebrities do in the U.S., yet their art still clearly retain an ethnic personality.

Pop songs might often sound similar to western styles but will also sometimes throw in a line played by a classical Chinese instruments, or some lyrics alluding to a classical Chinese tale. Movies and TV shows often take place in ancient times and contain many historical elements —— the Kung fu movies that have made their way around the globe are just one popular example.

Other than this, the Americanize trend also affect Chinese on pop food and life-style, especially among young people. American franchises star to occupy a portion of Chinese market. A lot of people even addicted to those "western-like" "cool" stores, such as McDonalds', Pizza Hut and Seven-eleven. In Hong Kong, there are over 500 Seven-eleven stores. It is like one store every another block.

Cartoon history in China started in the 1920s and was very traditional at that time. However, it has been heavily influenced by the needs of Western studios and Disney in particular since 1940s. Also affected by the rapidly developing Japanese animation storm.
As the popularity of cartoon industry, generations and generations of people grew up watching cartoon and animation. It is extremely popular among "after 80s".

Nowadays, animation in China is having a great changing and starts to form a new style like Japanese marketing. Zi bu yu is an animation story drawn by Chinese illustrator - April, and published both in China and Japan. A lot of Japanese people like it too. The name of this animation is taken from Confucius's quote "子不语怪力乱神", which means gentlemen do not talk about weird things. But all the stories in this animation are about weird things and obscure things that cannot be told clearly.

Summary of 1 text from book

Summary of "Swoosh"
The article Swoosh, which is written by Read Mercer Schuchardt, is the sound of Nike’s symbol. This article is all about symbols that mean a lot to us. In every culture, symbols are used frequently. Nike Swoosh, for example, is the most successful case. When Swoosh first came out, it was come up with the word of Nike, and the sign of Swoosh was drawn by a design student and cost $35 US. Gradually, Phil Knight, the CEO of Nike, decided to remove the word of Nike. The funny thing is people in the world could easily recognize the Swoosh is a symbol of Nike. What the author says is that not only can an icon represent a symbol of something, but also can it be the meaning, sound, movement, and name of the represented thing. Nowadays, our world is descending back to using symbols. Our languages are being replaced by symbols. In this globalizing world, businesses would be better to teach people a symbol other than to teach a new language, English, of their product name to non-English speakers. The case is that there were few companies, e.g. Mercedes-Benz, started fallowing Nike’s method. They tried to use text-less symbol for their products, and seemed successful. Therefore, people should not underestimate the power of symbols. If sport is the religion of the modern age, then Nike has become the official church. By the time, Swoosh become a true religious icon. People all believe in Nike would not actually wear a cloth of Nike, but something with the Swoosh.

International Film Festival

Claustrophobia. The state in which fear arise when being inside an enclosed space, and is the best title there is for this Ivy Ho's directorial debut. It is kind of a romance film without too many dramatic love plots. In stead, only an ambiguous relationship goes on between a marketing secretary and her married manager.
"Claustrophobia" opens with Tom (Ekin Cheng) driving Pearl (Karena Lam) home with other colleagues after a late-night drinking session, which is the ending of the story. Then the film proceeds to flash back one week; one month; half of a year; and 18 months previous. This story-telling form of going back in time, step by step, gives adequate explanation of how the ending comes about.
The director has long being writing script for movies, though this is her first piece of being a director. Claustrophobia is a little bit too quiet comparing to the other popular romance movies, and also a little hard to understand. The setting is always in a limited car space. Really not hard and the film just took 16 days to record. It is better to have a peaceful background and watch it by yourself or with few close friends, because there is not too much to talk about while watching an obscure film. That way you may focus on the atmosphere the director tries to make, and the intense inner struggle between the two lead roles.
