Music Section Reflection

The past month in humanity class, we worked on the section emphasizing on music. Music is one of the most important elements when talking about pop-culture. Nowadays, it is not hard to see people walking whenever with their headphone on playing varied kinds of music. It is becoming a major part of life-style in America, or places out of America.
Although music is close to daily life, I never really had a serious analysis of it. In this section, we read song lyrics and articles from famous musician and writer. We watched the video clip talking about rap. We shared the song of our favorite on blogs, and searched the present top 40 songs on the internet. We also did song analysis ourselves and gave a presentation of our songs.
I experienced an “Aha Movement” when Saul was giving his song analysis presentation. I heard the song “Where is the love” long before I came here, but didn’t try to find out the deep meanings of the lyrics. I kind of got the feeling that the song is talking about something more than just an emotional release. There must be something going on other than what I’ve gotten from the song. Now I understand better, after looking at the lyrics and listening to Saul’s explanation. It is more of a calling for love and hope to the place where wars and racial discrimination still exist.
If I am going to create a bumper sticker for this unit, mine would be “blast off the same traffic”. People are always annoyed with the Friday afternoon traffic. Sometimes only by hearing the word traffic can get us the feelings of annoying. It is just like listening to the same type of Western pop music all the time. You really in need to get rid of the Western pop traffic!
I learned the concept of genre, which is a word originally from French and means the different classification of music, along with the concepts of mainstream, margin and subculture.
What I found most interesting is lyrics analysis. When I tried to find information of the song I was going to present. My research helped me a lot in getting to know my musician more, and understand the song better. I think I’ll keep doing this to the other songs I like in the future.
